Campus Hoogvliet

This firm examined two options for interweaving the campus with the surrounding housing, which they called ‘Combi-Cluster’ and ‘Re-Use’.

In the Combi-Cluster the common functions are thematised in three clusters: culture (cultural centre, auditorium and youth club), sport (sports centre, swimming pool, fitness club and skating rink) and knowledge (library and media library). On the basis of the existing identities of the schools, this leads to the following linkages: Penta College & Culture, ROC-Zadkine & Sport, Einstein Lyceum & Knowledge. The three school buildings are mixed in among the housing, which is built as a ‘vertical garden city’ and comprises blocks with gardens on the various storeys.

The second option, Re-Use, examines the possibility of creating a campus while preserving the existing housing blocks. The homes are enlarged by combining them and the ground floor is used to house amenities and shops. The schools would also make use of the flats (in their bare structural state). By spanning the space between two blocks of flats, the space is created for major communal functions such as an auditorium and sports centre.

SpeeSlikDoepel came together specially for this assignment and its members are Bart Spee (PLUS architecten), André van der Slik and Duzan Doepel (RAL2005), architects with plenty of experience of working with such renowned Rotterdam firms as MVRDV and a special talent for converting rational analytical studies into appealing images.
